Obligation, no. I think it's best to look at most situations with apathy. After careful observation should sides be picked, if one so chooses.

I just completed 'Dream Children' by A.N.Wilson. It's a sweet story of love between a philosopher and a 10 year old girl.

I think we should relish the moments we spend with our young friends and not worry about trifling endings. All things come to an end, however much we'd love to hold on.
