Education Minister Di Farmer does not know whether a controversial book with pedophilic inferences is available to kids at Queensland school libraries.
However she pledged to find out after Katter Australian Party Leader Robbie Katter on Tuesday asked if she could confirm the book, Gender Queer, was not available in Queensland schools.
“The book ‘Gender Queer’ shows its author fantasising about pedophilia with an image of a man touching a boy’s genitalia,” Mr Katter said.
Gender Queer by Author, Maia Kobabe is publicly accessible in the Brisbane City Council Library with only 10 of the 17 copies currently available to borrow.
The book also contains graphic images and content including “vagina slime”, “blow-jobs”, dildos, and masturbation.
Family Value Advocate Bernard Gaynor has since spoken out following Mr Katter’s question after he has long campaigned against the book saying he also wanted to ensure the book, which depicts pedophilia fantasies is not in any school across the State.
“This book is available in a number of public libraries,” he said.
“It is concerning it’s been used as an educational resource across western nations (the United States and United Kingdom).”
Minister for Education Ms Farmer said she was unaware of the book and would make inquiries about it.
“It is very important Mr Speaker that we are very transparent about everything that happens in all of our portfolios,” she said.
Mr Gaynor said if it was in any schools, every parent at that school should be notified.
“’Gender Queer’, which depicts its author fantasising about pedophilia, has been found in a number of schools in the US and the UK and it is now on public library shelves across Queensland,” he said.
“Every parent has a right to know if this book is making its way into Queensland’s schools.”
Mr Gaynor urged the Education Minister to be upfront with parents and to take all action necessary to ensure the book did not make its way into school libraries and classrooms and is urgently removed in any school where it is found.
“Pedophile fantasy comics are totally unsuitable for classrooms and public libraries.”
An Education Department spokesman refused to clarify if it was aware of the book being in any Queensland school.
“The Department of Education can confirm that Gender Queer: A Memoir is not in the Department’s recommended readings or booklists for delivery of Australian Curriculum, including the Premier’s Reading Challenge.”
“Schools and principals make decisions about the purchasing of appropriate resources to support their delivery of the curriculum, informed by their local context.
“Schools regularly review resources and materials to ensure they are relevant to the learning needs of students and considerate of the local context.”
A Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts Spokesman said on 20 July 2023, the Classification Review Board classified Gender Queer: A Memoir ‘Unrestricted’ with an age recommendation of ‘M – not recommended for readers under 15’.
“Under the National Classification Scheme (NCS), each state and territory has classification enforcement legislation that sets out how films, publications and computer games can be sold, hired, exhibited and advertised in each jurisdiction.
“Enforcement under the National Classification Scheme (including in public libraries) is a matter for states and territories,” they said.
The Spokesman said the government, Classification Board and Classification Review Board were not responsible for the availability of publications in libraries.

With the protagonist, of course, being the boy in question. Apparently being an AAM is also to be censored. The book ‘Gender Queer’ shows its author fantasising about pedophilia with an image of a man touching a boy’s genitalia
