The thing about "statutory rape" is that you'll be imprisoned for consensual sex, so if you're automatically treated as a villain no matter what you do, then why not just embrace the villain and become an actual rapist? It’s a bit like when people call for rape to be punished with the same penalties as murder: in practice, at a certain point it would be in the rapist’s interest to kill the victim. Clearly, proportionality in sentencing has its usefulness in discouraging the escalation of such scenarios.
