Nuclear or extended, is key! At least in the context of an egalitarian society!
Nuclear families= 2 parents and 2.5 kids (the .5 being the 'pet'). Such are systematically overwhelmed, by design (i think). Extended families have been pushed to the margins thanks to Good Educations everywhere in the Realm, and even those which remain remain tenuously.
Extended families, in the context of egalitarian society, meant that young people could go to VARIOUS authorities (not Authorities) for input!! And the biological parents would have MUCH MORE sanity in terms of NOT having to do all the work of running a home!
Of course, in the context of anti-egalitarian Societies, like those of the First World, extended families are often blocked from their bests; where parents fear to speak "too much" truth to security-culture-less youths, for one!
But you're probably speaking up from a place where you've experienced only Authoritarianism in the family context. Not at this moment, able to see the value of family? Well, of course, families are under strict controls these days. And the parental units (heh) only wish (?) to see their progeny have it "easier" than they, so they try to push you into following their prescriptions, yes?

I disagree. Only 1 and 2 are bad because they are artificial creations of economic pressure.
Let me list the four models of families
1) Single parent family
2) Nuclear Family (mom dad kids)
3) Extended family (mom dad aunts uncles grand parents all in the same roof raising kids)
4) Communal child rearing (the whole community/village model)
Early human history was a mix of 3) and 4) but the parents in normal cases knew their offspring, so it wasn't promiscuity norms like Marxist believe and further more, in modern day when the nuclear family was destroyed capitalism kept going. Showing evidence that the nuclear family is not the fuel of capitalism - because a single funko pop collecting consumer drinking soymilk fuels capitalism far better then the nuclear family ever did. The most common model before industrial capitalism was a very strong family, it was mother and father surrounded by uncles, aunts, grandparents, and siblings all under the same roof with the community chipping in, and if you go back to prehistoric times you see more like 4) but with one major exception communal/village families of the past had the biological parents are the forefront and everyone else chipped in. The bio parents were the first layer of the band, and aunts uncles and community was the second and third. Marxist tried to say communal families were promiscuous and no one knew whos kids belonged to whom, when in reality it was a band model with bio parents at the front and the community surrounding them with many extended family/village family hybrids.

The only way to bring back the extended family is to make it where people can afford large houses and land to live on. That way mom dad, grandma, grandma, aunts and uncles can all live under the same roof like they did 100s of years ago. The only way to bring back communal families is to directly challenge strong social norms and stigmas which may be virtually impossible because our society can accommodate nuclear and extended in theory but village would require small communities that volunteer and adhere to behaviors that are not socially acceptable.
In a sense the village family never died because when I was a kid i would go around and interact with neighbors and they would give me food and advice once in a while, but it wasn't mandatory communal care, just friendly people. Maybe the best alternative to communal family today are just really good family friends that chip in significantly, but even they are expected boundaries.
