Career Parenting

Post by Bookshelf »

What are everyone's thoughts on 'career parenting'?

When I say career parenting, I don't necessarily mean stay at home or full time parents. I mean people that make parenting their sole identity — their children are their social lives, emotional support, and their hobbies all in one. They are people that treat child raising as 'something to do' rather than an obligation. I wouldn't call this helicopter parenting since this implies something more intensive; I'm referring to parents that base their own value on what they in regards to raising their children, to a point where they do everything they can to ensure stunted or minimal growth.

For me, I think the prevalence of this style of parenting is one of many things that has plagued western culture's perception towards children. This style of parenting usually discourages natural development and growth in favor of the parents' comfort with the status quo of family life. When a child learns how to tie their own shoes, for example, that should be a step towards independence — it's one less thing the parent has to do every morning. Career parents, however, view it as one less thing to do that they can't necessarily replace, and so they discourage it. They don't teach them. They don't want their kids to grow up because if their kids did grow up, they don't have as much to do with their time.

Anti-AMSC sentiments likely come from a wide variety of sources, but I think the rise of the career parent is one of them. Sexuality in western culture is highly associated with autonomy. These parents don't want their kids to have independence, for as long as possible.

Yeah I see this crap on fb all the time from people, moms that cannot go a single day without posting their kids doing the most obscure things imaginable. though in that instance i might be confusing validation posting with what you are describing. Either way a lot of moms and sometimes even dads make their whole personality "look at me I have a family now!!!!!"

This actually reminds me vaguely of a family guy clip lol.
