“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the State.” (Anon.) ... The lie in this case is the existence of a multi-billion dollar child pornography industry.

Public emotion over these cases is fed by two popular myths: (1) that most men who possess child pornography are pedophiles in waiting and long prison terms for illegal images are an effective strategy for keeping them off the streets, and (2) that they create a “market” for images from which criminals profit financially through exploitation of children who would not otherwise be exploited. (1) has been refuted by countless academic studies, surveyed by criminologist William Thompson on the Foundation’s website. (2) has never been credibly established, since most of these images are traded freely on the Dark Web. The Percy Foundation plans this Spring to conduct a survey of persons incarcerated for child pornography offenses to determine what percentage, if any, ever exchanged money for such images.
Seems like the Percy Foundation is one step ahead of us. If they already completed the survey, that is. You should try contacting them and let us know the results.

I think it is a multi billion dollar industry, at least that's how much charities and government agencies make under the banner of fighting cp.
I doubt people make much from producing it, how could they? You couldn't be paid in dollars and there isn't that much trade happening in cryptocurrencies or else it would show up in the many monitoring services that try to tackle digital crime.

I think charities like any organisation needs to increase its income each year and that only happens if the size of the problem increases.
But there sits the problem, technology and LEA makes cp less and less viable, so you would expect to see a fall in figures and a fall in the amount of agencies and charities need. But in fact the numbers trend up towards infinity, so I believe a large part of the problem is fabricated to plug the hole that is caused by a shrinking problem.
Keep every stone they throw at you. You've got castles to build.

There's likely far more money wasted in fighting cp that anyone actually makes from it. Groups like the ncmec intake a lot of capital and do nothing beyond target teenagers sending each other pictures or taking down the odd dude who uploaded a dozen pictures to Facebook or something

That money would be better spent on kids themselves. Fearmongering is a great way to make money.
