I would advise against Tor since I have read somewhere that it isn't as secure as people believe. I use Mulvad browser and VPN. And Proton mail is also a good one. Just be sure that you have your settings right so that your emails are indeed encrypted.

Tor is fine for common individual use. The recent concerns about its security level are due to the fact that German authorities have taken control of enough Tor nodes (they're volunteer-run, and anyone can start one) to enable de-anonymization attacks to some extent. However, those attacks are only known to have been used against hidden Tor services (i.e. darknet websites), never against individuals using them. Even though the latter is technically possible, the resources required means that the authorities wouldn't bother unless you're a large-scale criminal. In any case, better technologies are being worked on.

There are pros and cons to VPNs as well. Pros: the fundamental technology is proven, reliable, and some VPNs include an added layer of encryption. Cons: good ones are generally costly (thus likely no good for a 14-year-old), and if your VPN provider collaborates with the authorities, you're toast.

For the particular use case here, I'd recommend Tor over Mullvad, since it's free and Doxinator14 doesn't intend to engage in large-scale criminal activities.

The only good VPNs would require you to pay for them.

And yeah, as long as you're not relying on Tor to e.g. build an online drug dealing empire, it's fine. Even if you're not going to break the law at all, it's prudent to avoid tying your real IP address to any online activities that might attract the attention of authorities. Tor isn't perfect, and you must take other general precautions to avoid disclosing your identity, but it still can make it so that's you're not an obvious target for the mounties.

If you're using your cellphone with the cellphone network (not the Internet), that's not advisable because it involves additional risks—cellphone companies keep records and have active cooperation deals with the authorities. If you're using your phone as a device to connect to the regular Internet, then using the Tor browser is alright.
