crystal glass

a ray of light hits a crystal glass
refracting joy and warmth and laughter
a vessel for drink? perhaps—
but more: for memories
a chocolate milk after school
too much wine at a party
an iced tea poured for a guest
but one slip—
and now the glass is a thousand shards
scattered on the floor
shards that cannot be repaired
even if glued back together
never to be reassembled,
never to resemble what it was
to remain empty
of memories,
of light,
of joy
swept away with the rest of the trash
soon to be forgotten
no longer refracting light—
just reflecting the darkness
refracting joy and warmth and laughter
a vessel for drink? perhaps—
but more: for memories
a chocolate milk after school
too much wine at a party
an iced tea poured for a guest
but one slip—
and now the glass is a thousand shards
scattered on the floor
shards that cannot be repaired
even if glued back together
never to be reassembled,
never to resemble what it was
to remain empty
of memories,
of light,
of joy
swept away with the rest of the trash
soon to be forgotten
no longer refracting light—
just reflecting the darkness
