What's with the whole public and private thing on the forum?

Honestly not a fan imo it makes the forum kind of messy.

For me too, the tags are a bit messy, considering that often the sections—except for the first one—seem either all public or all private, so it might as well make sense to put the tag next to the section name.

Exactly just have it public or put it as private like VOA does.

The tags can be removed.

Maybe the sections could be be color coded? For example:

#56B4E9 for Public sections
#009E73 for Private sections
#E69F00 for Approved Members only

I used those colors as examples, because they're supposed to be accessible to colorblind people.

Given the only forum wrapper with both public and private sections is Intros, I think this could be done for most of the board.

Possibly an indent for the two new forums below Public General, as this implies to the reader that these topics are fair game in private general (since there is no private equivalent, only general).

The redesign of the forum and logo will be sand/yellow colour when it is complete. These are worth bearing in mind with changes to color.

The tags are gone except where clearly needed.

By far the best suggestion.

Now it looks much better, before it gave a sense of visual overload that caused confusion, perhaps due to the repetition of terms or the use of parentheses.
