A Wikipedia conference in Manhattan descended into chaos Friday morning when an unhinged Ohio man jumped on stage and pointed a gun at his own head.

Connor Weston, 27, allegedly clutched the loaded revolver as he declared, “I’m a non-contact pedophile. I want to kill myself” — prompting WikiConference staff to quickly tackle and disarm him before cops took him into custody, sources said.

“It was just adrenaline,” said one of the staffers who stopped the gunman. “Since you’re on the trust and safety team you’re expected to do this .. we’re not used to loaded weapons in the same room….we’re used to more prank behavior.”

Weston is a member of Virtuous Pedophiles, but does not have any role on their committee.

Weston — who wore a multicolored banner draped over his shoulders and a sign around his neck with the words “ANTI-CONTACT NON-OFFENDING PEDOPHILE” — was detained at the conference, which was hosted at Union Square’s Civic Hall on East 14th Street near Irving Place, sources said.

“I think we handled it pretty well considering this was not an expected thing,” the worker who helped stop the incident added. “We’re expected to do that for every event but in a place like NYC you’re going to have more people and more chance of it.”

Weston is awaiting charges at the NYPD’s 9th Precinct.

No one was hurt, but the disturbing ordeal was enough to rattle witnesses and others inside the building.

“It was surprising. One of the keynote speakers was presenting and then all of a sudden there was someone on the stage saying something about suicide,” one woman said. “I didn’t realize he had a gun but apparently he did. But the response was really fast: ‘get down, get out.’

“People were scared,” the witness added.

Another woman, Karen Ganes, was taking a coffee break from an unrelated class on the fifth floor when alarms started blaring, alerting building occupants of someone with a gun on the second floor.

“They told us to go back into our classroom and lock the door,” Ganes said. “But it was glass. It was half glass. So we kind of went to the back where there was a wall there.

Another woman threw herself onto the floor in fear, Ganes recalled.

“I texted my sister, and she’s very spiritual,” she added. “She just said, ‘I’m praying for you. Let me know what’s happening.’”

Weston, from Dayton, had registered for the conference, which was being held in New York this year to celebrate the city’s 400th anniversary, according to the event page.

In a late June post on X, he explained that he is “fundamentally against adult/minor relations because I know that they are harmful.”

“I don’t have any ‘urges’ that I have to control, just like how most straight men don’t have the urge to rape every woman they meet,” he wrote. “Pedophilia is not a choice. I can choose to not harm minors, but I cannot choose to stop being attracted to them.”

A Wikimedia Foundation spokesperson said the conference will continue – though with extra security and police presence – after the gunman was cuffed.

“Participants at WikiConference North America are safe, and are continuing to gather together in community,” the rep said. “We appreciate the conference organizers and attendees who stepped in to help during the opening ceremony.

“The rest of the event will proceed as planned, and there will be additional security as well as law enforcement onsite for the entire event.”

Sure, I suppose, I would imagine that its just going to have wikipedia dig their heels in on their anti-MAP editorial stance. So any hope of them softening their line is probably down the drain...unless it rattled enough cages to cause power editors to break ranks. The entire point of non-anti-Cs boosting anti-C is to make MAPs more palatable to normies, I don't see how a NOMAP card-carrying VIRPEDer (not even some lone nut!) going Elliot Rodger mode on himself as a form of protest is going to convince normies that NOMAPs are safe and to be trusted.

Maybe the die has been cast all along and there was no chance of wikipedia softening their line after MAPs lost the wikipedo wars in the 2000s. We don't know what kind of internal dissension might be going on with the editors on this issue. Considering how many mass shootings happen in the US, this really might be a flash in the pan in the news cycle, and if it is does damage to any chance of wikipedia softening its line considering how notable it is, is that not potentially worse for us long-term? The rise of LLMs does diminish wikipedia's value but it still has a lot of traffic and wikipedia is part of the data tranches that the AI slop generators are trained on...

Wikipedia regards the safety of children using the site as a key issue. Wikipedia does not tolerate inappropriate adult–child relationships. Editors who attempt to use Wikipedia to pursue or facilitate inappropriate adult–child relationships, who advocate inappropriate adult–child relationships on- or off-wiki (e.g. by expressing the view that inappropriate relationships are not harmful to children), or who identify themselves as pedophiles, will be blocked and banned indefinitely.

I would be somewhat provocative and push to fire all those people who don’t live in countries where the age of consent is the same as the age of majority. Then, identifying as a pedophile and actually being a pedophile are two different things — there are people who identify as such but are not (probably due to anxiety-related reasons), and there are people who are but don’t identify as such (likely due to phobia).

A person on Wikipedia is therefore banned and blocked based on their sexual orientation, even if kept entirely private, and this is simply discriminatory. I believe this could be considered illegal in some European countries, although I wouldn’t swear to it.
