Some more context about Ballard and OUR, for those of you who aren't familiar. A journalist named Lynn Packer did a series on Ballard and OUR, beginning with the following video.

"Op-Ed about Tim Ballard and Operation Underground Railroad"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7ScI9d6Aag

Even non-MAPs recognize Ballard's unethical behavior.

I hope they're willing to bribe the judge this time.

Live in a country like that, play by those rules.

They didn't get 10 years for PIM. They got it for not playing the game.

I also kept thinking they were being too idealistic, but then I noticed that line about Ballard and OUR having more money for bribery than them. If the judge's verdict goes to the highest bidder, I'm not sure it would matter whether or not they bribed the the judge. I'd like to be wrong though. However, OUR fights to save face all the time. For example, there was a woman involved in the events that The Sound of Freedom was based off, who they completely lied about being a pimp, posting billboards with her actual face next to the actress who played her. OUR doesn't want anything that contradicts their image or gives credence to criticism of them, and are happy to bend the law to further that goal.

Update 13 September:

The judge's ruling has been upheld in the appeal. According to the lawyers, their defence was not listened to.

Pay to play system.

Don't live somewhere like that if you won't play the game.

Hi all,

Today is a sad day. The person (Anton Dautzenberg) who has been covering the story of Marthijn and Lesley posted today that their appeal to the Supreme Court has been rejected. As far as I know, that was their last legal remedy in Ecuador.

Sad news.

I reiterate my comment above.

And add that you should not live in a poor country as a vocal MAP if you do not have external funds.

The criminal justice system is not about punishing bad people. Rather, it is about forcing the will of society, or of powerful actors, on an individual. In a poor and corrupt country like Ecuador, all it takes is money to have an individual imprisoned using fabricated evidence, or on the contrary for an individual to buy his or her freedom.

What will happen now?

I recently listened to a (old) podcast with Marthijn and Norbert, a lovely conversation, and I got the impression they are such beautiful persons. Knowing Marthijn is going through this fills me with such sadness...
