Wealthy Rabbi released from jail in deal related to ongoing litigation with charities

Rabbi Daniel Greer kept control of his yeshiva while behind bars. He kept control of dozens of Edgewood rental properties. Now a judge has ordered him released years early from prison.

On Wednesday, state Superior Court Judge Tracy Lee Dayton issued an order of sentence modification and discharge that allows Greer to be released by as early as 9 a.m. Thursday, primarily because of his old age and poor health.

The judge also maintained a 10-year term of probation that was initially imposed upon Greer when he was first sent to prison in December 2019.

The judge’s decision appears to bring to an end all civil and criminal cases related to the once-powerful Edgewood religious and civic figure who has spent the past six years in prison for sexually abusing a former student of his named Eliyahu Mirlis.
