A bill to prohibit underage marriage in Oklahoma has cleared its first hurdle.
Senate Bill 504, authored by Sen. Warren Hamilton, R-McCurtain, unanimously passed through the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The bill would eliminate current provisions in state law that allow 16- and 17-year-olds to marry with parental consent.
Hamilton said the bill aims to further protect children in Oklahoma along with the unanimous vote in the Senate in 2025 to raise the state’s age of consent from 16 to 18.
