Joliet politicians exacerbate vendetta against apartments
LA, I believe was the first jurisdiction to build anti-registrant tiny parks.
These people are such scum. I have no idea how they see themselves as the "good guys".It was in 2020 that the then-mayor of Joliet first set upon his mission to destroy the transitional housing apartments on Cora Street where half a dozen men were living, men who had served time for sexual crime convictions. His initial attempt met a dead end when, in March of 2021, a federal court declared unconstitutional a ruling from 2005 prohibiting more than one registrant to be registered at the same address.
Mayor O’Dekirk then decided to utilize an Illinois law that prohibited those convicted as child sexual offenders from living within 500 feet of certain structures, one of them being a playground.
The mayor’s plan was to create what has come to be known as a “pocket park” within 500 feet of the NewDay Apartments, home to the registrants.
