List of rules for my night shift part 6
By galileo2333
It's been a month since the apparitions of the two girls had manifested in the building during my night shift. I entered at 6:30pm. I checked all the usual conditions per the rules list. The tamper evident seal on the fridge in the break room. The lights in the electron microscope room and the XRF spectrometer room. It was when I opened the hidden door on the control panel for the SCP-313 hand dryers in the bathrooms , verifying the indicator light is steady green, that I noticed something I hadn't before. There are 5 bathrooms on the first floor that are numbered and have the SCP-313 hand dryers. They were numbered 1,3,4,5,6. I'd never noticed before they skipped number 2. I didn't think that meant anything, so I treated the condition as normal.
I began my work tasks. At 1:30am, I took a break and noticed the older girl in the break room. She was seated at a table, and there was a large yellow bottle of Gatorade. She was wearing the "world's sweetest Muslim girl" shirt and the light blue hijab. It felt like she wanted to interact with me with an unusually strong attraction force. I looked at the winged My Little Pony Apple Jack plushie on the couch and said out loud "friendship is magic". This time however something stuck in my throat, causing me to cough or hiccup a little bit as I said that. I turned and exited the break room, out of view. As I did so, my feet stumbled slightly but I caught myself and didn't fall.
When I entered the break room, the older girl had vanished, as expected. The Gatorade bottle was also absent. Because it was after midnight, I knew to anticipate both girls would remain in the building, staying some distance from me and keeping each other company so they wouldn't distract me and my work assignments.
The chatter between the girls seemed more animated than normal. I couldn't hear any specific conversation, but there was some hint of words and phrases like "he's so hot". Still, I didn't perceive any increased hazard or unusual situation.
Most of the building was dark, except for my work area and one fluorescent lamp clear at the other end of the lab, where the girls sat on the floor. I had a direct line of sight, from my illuminated work station, through the darkness hiding shelves, test equipment, supplies, etc., to where the girls sat facing each other.
One of the girls stood up. I could see it was the older girl. She strutted away from the younger girl. She walked around a corner out of sight from me. I knew in that area Bathroom #1 was located. I heard a firm closing of a door from there, that I recognized by sound as the door on that bathroom.
Following protocol I entered the conference room and fastened the quick door-barracade hardware. I opened the panel hidden by wallpaper. A green indicator light and the five buttons. I pushed #1. The light turned yellow. I couldn't hear any hand dryer, no surprise because that bathroom is quite far from here. After only about 10 seconds it began flashing. That's odd, usually it indicates for about 30 seconds before something changes. I pushed it again. This time the indicator light turned white.
There wasn't anything in the rules I've been given so far about what to do if the light turns white. On the wall adjacent to the panel I was looking at, the big conference screen came to life.
It displayed:
The SCP Foundation has detected an unexpected condition and you'll need to follow some procedures. Read and understand fully.
The SCP-313 in Bathroom 1 will activate its anomalous mode to protect you. This time, however it's different. You'll need to continue activating the unit (when the white begins to flash, push button 1 again) until the light turns yellow again. After that, you'll get your next instructions. The SCP-313 anomaly will activate in a series of short impulses as long as the indicator light stays white.
Once the light turns yellow again, it will remain yellow longer than normal, about 90 seconds, before turning green. Once you see the green light, check the monitor for your next instructions.
A series of rumbling blast noises occurred. The white light began flashing after about a minute, so I pushed the button again. More blasts, increasing in intensity and tempo, persisting for about two minutes. The light turned yellow. It seemed unusually bright. Also it seemed like there was still some of the rumbling noise echoing in the distance, fading gradually. As predicted, the light turned green after about 90 seconds of yellow.
On the screen, a message displayed:
You'll need to break one of the rules tonight. It's risky, but it's your only chance at saving yourself.
You'll have to touch the My Little Pony Apple Jack winged plushie, and the couch that plushie is on. Specifically, you are to proceed straight to the break room, sit on the couch with the MLP figure under you, straddling her with her head forward and you sitting aft of her wings, like as if you'd be mounting the winged horse for a ride. Close your eyes and loudly proclaim, three times, "friendship is magic!".
You will then experience something that cannot be explained in the amount of time you have to act now. We're not even sure what your experience will be. But if all goes well you should find yourself waking up in your bed in your apartment.
I opened the conference room door and carefully exited. I entered the break room, straddling the MLP Apple Jack plushie as per the instructions. I closed my eyes and declared loudly and clearly "friendship is magic!" three times.
Immediately everything faded to darkness and I had a sensation of weightlessness. I found myself experiencing the perception of a man in a mosque, at what looked like a Friday congregation. The mosque had brick walls and behind the congregation was a set of glass brick windows. It was bright outside, like a sunny day, except all colors of everything were a grayscale or monochrome sepia.
I experienced my forehead on the floor in sujood. At that moment, the scene shifted. I was viewing down on what looked like a meeting table. In the background of that was a row of lockers like a locker room, and a doorway leading out to what must have been a large gymnasium.
I heard roller skates echoing on a hard floor, and women shouting at each other. A group of women rolled in and removed and tossed aside their skates and gathered at the table. A woman stood at one end of the table and said "OK rats listen up" in a demeanor to call everyone to attention. She began talking about some "wierdo" who wants to legalize it for old guys to have intimate relationships with young girls, including children. The women talked about how the state had recently enacted a ban on underage marriage "and now this dude says people should organize rallies to repeal that". One woman said "I've got an idea to get rid of him. He always rides one of those share bikes when he attends prayer at the mosque. We can rig something up to crash him and make it look like an accident".
The view immediately switched back to the mosque and me rising up and fetching my shoes. I was completely unable to do anything. I was experiencing a replay of someone else's experience. Exiting the mosque I looked at a phone screen indicating one shared bike was available to unlock, and then looked to see several of the bikes that looked perfectly fine but only one showed being available.
As I mounted and started up that bike, I passed the parking lot of the mosque, congregants were getting in their cars. A young Somali girl about 9 years old, in loose draping garments looked at me flirtingly as she climbed in the back of her family's Tesla onto a booster seat and her parents closed the door. I noticed the car had an Ohio license plate and there was a bumper sticker saying " Elmore Springtime Festival".
Another girl, about 12 or 13 looked at me. She was wearing a shirt that had a big heart and the phrase "world's sweetest Muslim girl". She giggled hiding her face with her hands as she entered her parent's car, a Rivian SUV with a New York lisence plate framed by a dealer's advertisement "Sleepy Hollow Rivian".
The bike I was riding seemed to have a bump every time the front wheel turned. It wasn't very noticeable and as I picked up speed the "bumpity bumpity" increased into a steady rumble that didn't really feel like it would affect the bike handling much. It also felt like the front tire might be a little low on air, but still the ride wasn't all that bad for a shared bike. It was only a short ride to where I'd be getting on a bus the rest of the way to home.
At a curve in the road was gravel scattered across the pavement. Suddenly the front wheel slipped out and I was in the air. It wasn't until I saw the razor sharp edge of a street sign, numbered "145th" and "5th" that I realized I was experiencing a replay of the last moments of the E-bike rider before he was decapitated.
The edge of the metal sign slashed into my neck and instantly I woke up in my bed in my apartment.
I looked at the TV across from my bed. It lit up with a message saying "There's something you must do at 9:30 am that is extremely important. You will be in the most dangerous situation yet, except the procedure for protecting yourself is simple and quick".
More text appeared. At 9:30 am you will notice a very pleasant smell that can't really be described, but you'll know it when it happens. Put on your headphones and get into your bed, laying on your back with with your whole body, head and all, under your covers and stay as still as possible. Play the song "Cherry Cola" by Savage Garden, at medium volume in your headphones. Its critical that you don't move, especially don’t dance or bounce to the music, because then she might notice you there. You'll be having a very bad day if she gets in bed with you!
So long as you remain still and the music is loud enough to block out your hearing but is not loud enough to be heard beyond your bed, there's a protective barrier. You will need to modulate the volume and any noise you make in a pattern similar to guiding a spacecraft re-entering the atmosphere that needs an exact trajectory to avoid skipping back into space and being lost forever or coming in too steep and burning up.
As soon as that song is finished, enter your bathroom, with the door open and the light off. Look in the mirror and when you see the girl behind you, in the blue hijab and the blouse with the heart and "world's sweetest Muslim girl", say "this home is purified" three times and she will disappear.
I looked at the clock. 6:47 am. I figured nothing significant would occur until 9:30, so I didn't do much. The song I was to play in my headphones was quickly available via YouTube.
At 9:29 am, I noticed a smell, not just a smell, but more of a feeling in the air. It was like the presence of a pubescent girl fading in and out of existance.
I lay in my bed, covering myself with the blankets. I made sure my head to my toes were covered, and I was flat on my back in a straight, comfortable positon. As the clock struck 9:30 I played the song "Cherry Cola" by Savage Garden, in my headphones at just loud enough volume to prevent me from hearing any obvious sounds from inside my apartment.
I remained as still as I could. Every time I shifted ever so slightly I felt a presence of something noticing me. In the background behind the music I had a perception, ever so slight of noises from the bathroom, movement or even toilet paper being pulled. Perhaps I was just imagining that, but I knew better than to try to find out.
The song ended. I entered my bathroom, the light was off, and I left the door open behind me. In the mirror, was the older of the two phantom girls I'd been experiencing. She was smiling and even in her dark Somali face I could tell she was blushing. She was wearing the light blue hijab and the blouse with the heart and the phrase "world's sweetest Muslim girl". Suprisingly, she was wearing baggy pants that were short enough to display most of her ankles, almost up to her knees, really becoming immodest by Muslim standard.
I glared straight into the mirror at her.
THIS HOME IS PURIFIED
THIS HOME IS PURIFIED
THIS HOME IS PURIFIED
I declared. She instantly disappeared into thin air.
Nothing was unusual about the apartment afterwards. No odors, noises, apparitions or feelings like anyone else was there.
I slept the rest of the day. When I woke up in the afternoon, I recieved a message on my phone telling me to watch my mailbox for a package from the SCP Foundation labeled SCP-834. SCP-834 is an item that has been removed from the SCP when enemy forces kidnapped an SCP employee caring for SCP-834. Specifically the enemy is an unnamed group that wants to reinforce laws against adult with child intimate relationships.
The next few nights were average, I encountered the apparitions of both girls, and acted according to the rules.
One Saturday mail delivery, SCP-834 arrived. As I brought it into my apartment, my phone buzzed with a message. It said to place SCP-834 in my kitchen drawer, remove everything else from that drawer, and leave it over Saturday night and don't open that drawer until 7:30 am Sunday. "When you open the drawer SCP-834 will be gone and you'll find something you might enjoy", the message added.
I removed all the utensils from a drawer in my kitchen, leaving the drawer empty. I placed the small package marked SCP-834 into the drawer and closed it.
7:30 next morning, Sunday, I opened the drawer. In it was a cardboard frame that said:
SCP Foundation
DANGER: Cognitohazard risk level Keter (extreme) Audio and Visual.
Unfolding the frame revealed a micro SD card of the size that fits my phone. Next to that, a label:
Video 67 seconds in length.
