The narrator of this true crime mini-doc mentions several times that Sam insisted the encounter was consensual and he was very angry at being used as bait in a sting operation.

So I'm going to speculate.
It is true that some of his fantasies were in the extreme range, but people have had those and expressed them through art or fiction .
So while it cannot be said for certain it is a possibility that Mr Werner would still be with us if Sam Manzie had not been completely invalidated at every turn and used as a tool in a sting operation.
