A youth accuses you of sexual misconduct.
You know — and can prove — that you never touched them.
The accusation was retaliation for emotional rejection.
But mid-trial, the child privately begs you not to disprove them.
They admit the accusation was false —
but say the narrative gave them attention, protection, and a way to express
what they couldn’t say directly: that they loved you,
and didn’t know how to live with being invisible to you.
If you expose the truth, the child will be publicly humiliated,
likely institutionalized, possibly removed from their family.
You will go free, but they may suffer irreparably.
If you stay silent, you will be convicted —
but they will be celebrated as a survivor, and protected.
Do you destroy their life to save your own?
Or let the system destroy you, to protect the one who harmed you?
Hypothetical from hell
Hypothetical from hell
I asked AI to give me a challenging hypothetical for a MAP to deal with. It went hard, with this absolutely brutal one:
I'm not saying that all scoutmasters are pedophiles. I might be saying that the best ones are.

Re: Hypothetical from hell
Uh, for me, there's not much debate here.
The child consciously did something that would ruin my life, even though I was completely innocent. Besides, proving the accusation was false would be the only way I could defend myself. It's not like I'm doing it as retaliation or revenge; it's literally the only way I can defend myself.
No doubt about it. I wouldn't sacrifice so much to save someone who tried to harm me. Perhaps I could accept suffering minimal harm to avoid enormous harm to someone who tried to harm me... but it would have to be in that proportion. And being convicted for something like that wouldn't be minimal harm for me; it would be very serious harm.

Yeah, on reflection the hypothetical isn't as challenging to answer as I thought it would be.

That's easy, I'd expose them but also try to get the child to understand why what they did was wrong. If I didn't then they could just do the same thing again and again in the future, destroying more innocent lives, but speaking the truth gives the child the opportunity to learn and grow as an individual.
One thing I've taken away from reading history and about people who shaped the world in history is that they usually face dire personal situations but they make choices based on morals and convictions that are often unpopular and dangerous but are morally right and lead to change in the world. The unknowns are those who just float downstream going with the flow to avoid causing ripples.
This child will face a serious impact on their life that will force them to think and reflect and consider others. If they have the heart and spirit then that should press them into growing as a person, learning empathy, understanding the flaws in the system and the people around them and to come out of it as a much better and stronger person.
