NORTHERN KENTUCKY (WXIX) - A Northern Kentucky lawmaker is teaming up with law enforcement and state prosecutors to make grooming kids a crime.

Kentucky Rep. Marianne Proctor (R-Union) says the daughter of a close friend was groomed in an attempt to sexually abuse the child, making her that much more passionate about criminalizing the act.

Rep. Proctor is working with the Boone County Sheriff’s Office and Commonwealth’s Attorney Louis Kelly to get a new law passed next year in Frankfort.

"You want to use a calm, matter-of-fact tone" when having these conversations, Ridley says.

"The mid- to late- elementary years is a good general target," Michelson says. Many schools will offer sexual education around fifth grade. "Again, you want your kids to hear the information from you before they might hear it from a speaker at school."

What if time has flown by and you haven't opened the conversation with your kids? Are you too late?

"Later is better than never!" Michelson says.
