Here is an interesting thread about how a lot of people used to ship Axel (adult) and Roxas (teen) from Kingdom Hearts back in 2006-2010. A popular ship back then now taboo and problematic:

It's an interesting read because it shows that not that long ago, people were more lax with fictional MAP relationships and that things got worse in just 10 years where now even fictional MAP ships are seen as disturbing or even equivalent to CP.

To them, pedophile = irredeemable monster, the very worst thing a human being can be. So they can't reconcile liking a character to any extent with them being a pedophile. They shouldn't like or feel any empathy towards a pedophile so if they do, that means the character isn't really a pedophile. It's literally denial.
