Hi from another map campaigner

Post by Outis »

Hi there,
I've been an active member of map communities for around 20 years. Cripes, I just worked it out and that's scary.
I've had a few usernames over the years, I've made some great friends and I've contributed to a mix of advocacy projects.

My interest these days is more around how to build a community that is supportive of future generations of maps. I'm not expecting things to change significantly for me, but I hope that future generations will live in a more fair and positive society and that only happens when maps and other groups or accepted and respected like anybody else. I believe that day will come and I hope to see it, but it will take energy and work from across the map community.

Welcome. Twenty years is a long time. Very impressive. You are right. This is going to take a lot of work. It's unfortunate but things like this always take a while.

As time goes on we are seeing more and more older MAPs with that same approach. "Fighting until I die, for the next generation". It's both inspiring and depressing.

Even though I still probably have about half my life left, I feel that I'm not really fighting for myself any more.

Let's continue to do what we can in terms of community building and activism, though.
In a way if we build for future generations then it becomes more practical, it removes the haste and allows for more effective planning.
Like investing money, if you invest to get rich tomorrow you will likely lose your money, but if you plan your investments for 10, 20 or more years then you can be more strategic and far more likely to make a big return. I know of some royal households that have investment portfolios on the 400 year time horizon, and they do very well, but I don't think we have to go to that extreme :D

If we set goals to bring about total change in 20 years, impactful change in 10, noticeable change in 5, then we can start to run a real program of change which I believe would reach its goal.

It's time to recycle my identity, something I do from time to time. I'm going to abandon this account in a week or so, have a break then come back later on a new account. If anyone wants to reach me before I jump in a week or so them PM me.
