From ‘Child pornography’ to ‘Child sexual abuse and exploitation material’

For over 30 years, federal legislation in Canada has used the term “child pornography” to describe what are in reality horrific scenes of sexual violence and exploitation against children.

Today, this comes to an end.

The term “child sexual abuse and exploitation material”, “CSAEM” for short, will now officially replace former terminology across several federal laws. This change was long overdue.

As a result of Bill C-291, tabled in 2023, the language of our laws will finally more accurately reflect the abuse and exploitation offenders inflict upon victims and survivors of child sexual abuse and exploitation. The Bill was passed last October, but now comes into force today.

So the conflation between violent and non-violent offenders continues. Now a picture a minor takes of themselves naked can be in the same category as a video of a child being murdered. Surely they've got to understand how disingenuous it is to apply that label as broadly as they are?

Isn’t a lot of what’s called “CP” just child models? This new terminology is compressing harm of hurtcore with child nudity.

Words matter.
Is that why they’re always used incorrectly?

I hate that term because it's used to encapsulate more bullshit like fiction, dolls, and other things they make up as "abusive".
Child pornography conveys purpose of a real child involved, "CSAEM" is vaguer intentionally. Calling something actually abusive and something casual nudity the same waters down the actually abusive shit. It's so stupid and has no critical thought put into it.

It's all about softening the word, because god forbid you call it what it is.

We should stop giving them the benefit of the doubt.

They're not failing to distinguish because they're stupid.

They're intentionally misleading and manipulating people.

Those who pull the strings are absolute monsters.
