A Police Sergeant while behaving in an unruly manner under the influence of liquor and kissed and embraced an underage girl at the Bibila bus stand was taken into custody by Bibila police and produced before Bibila Magistrate Thyaga Silva. He was released on personal bail of Rs. 300,000 with three sureties each. He was a resident of Rideemaliyedda in Mahiyangana and attached to the Kandeketiya Police. Bibila Police produced him on charges of behaving in unruly manner in a public place under the influence of liquor and sexually harassing a ten year old girl. The case was postponed for October 19.

A proposal to lower the age of consent in India has reignited the debate over the legally appropriate age for engaging in consensual sexual activity. The campaign is being led by lawyer Indira Jaising, who says the age of consent should be reduced from 18 to 16. Consensual sex at the age of 16 or 17 is “neither exploitative nor abusive”, said Jaising, who has called to “exempt it from criminal prosecution”, said the BBC. The Indian Supreme Court will consider her argument on 12 November.
Around the world, the age at which a person can legally consent to sexual activity varies widely. In most countries, the age of consent is between 16 and 18 but there are outliers. And, in some countries, different age restrictions apply to heterosexual and homosexual activity and/or to boys and girls.
The age of consent in the UK is 16, regardless of sex or sexual orientation. But that rises to 18 if the sexual relationship is with an adult in a “position of trust”, such as a teacher, social worker, sports coach or doctor. It is illegal for an adult in a position of trust to have sex with a 16 or 17-year-old in their care.

In a shocking case of an alleged attempted sexual assault inside a moving auto-rickshaw in Mumbai, a teenager college student suffered serious injuries after she jumped out of the speeding vehicle to escape molestation, officials said.
