What Happened to the Erotic?

Lately, I’ve been mulling over an essay by Amy Francombe
To be desirable is currency. To desire is liability describing the bizarre world we find ourselves in today, namely, the weird warping that’s happened to the erotic. I highly recommend her essay and will include it at the end.

What happened to the erotic? When did it become such a bad word or, even worse, such a strong taboo that’s all but verboten in practice? It’s not just that we feel unpermitted to engage in eroticism with others, but increasingly, we struggle to allow ourselves even our own private eroticisms. Sex is, anymore, almost never about sex.
