Pakistan: Fazl rejects underage marriage law, slams peace plan

JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman strongly opposed legislation setting 18 as the minimum age for marriage, calling it un-Islamic and vowing to openly defy it.

Addressing a joint session of parliament, he said such laws should be referred to the Council of Islamic Ideology and warned that imposing legislation under alleged international pressure undermines Pakistan’s Islamic identity. He accused the government of bypassing parliament and announced protests against what he termed unconstitutional amendments.
