‘Good bloke’ defence scrapped for all NSW criminals in major move

The NSW Government is set to scrap “good character” references in the sentencing for all convicted criminals, in an Australia-first bid to reduce trauma to survivors.

The legislation means rapists and pedophiles will no longer be able to submit their history of “prior good character” in an effort to have their jail sentences reduced.

If there is such a thing as trauma, these people do realize that it’s independent of the punishment the criminal receives, right? If someone breaks my leg, that leg stays broken even if the attacker is sentenced to death.

The only thing that should be guaranteed to the victim is a fair and just trial for the aggressor—not that the judicial system should deal with their trauma; that’s what doctors or psychologists are for. Seriously, this trauma narrative used to justify one’s own sadism is irritating.
