It's concerning how easily traceable the campsite was, if the report is indeed correct.

I wonder if there are still plans to go ahead anyway?

There is nothing illegal about MAP camp as far as I'm aware.

The closest they got was "the camp site is somewhat near a school" and "MytheBe is followed by a member of PARSOL (with historic offences)".

While it'd obviously be better for a MAP event NOT to have a clear target on its back, "visibility" has to start somewhere, too. Public events held by MAPs will obviously be the target of counter protests. Those counter protests will always entail a risk of violence. But public events will be necessary at some point in order to reach mainstream acceptance. Is that point now? Is MAP camp with its 20 attendees the right kind of event?

The antis were saying "law enforcement has been contacted", yet a meeting of people with the same attraction (who unlikely NAMBLA don't even have a clear pro-c stance) should not be shut down. That'd be a clear violation of the right to freedom of assembly.

Are we willing to risk the small yet extant possibility of being shot in order to hold events like this? Is the risk worth it? If not now, when?

I think the ideal situation would be that the event is held without anyone being hurt, but that it becomes a big enough deal that it makes the news (though unlikely in election season unless there is violence). Visibility. It's always going to come at a cost. And while we're in the position of the oppressed the cost is always going to be high when looking at the benefits. Yet the hidden cost of doing nothing is that nothing changes.

Why was it advertised publicly? I hope it's a publicity stunt, otherwise advertising it like that really puts everyone at risk for no reason.

The approach could have been "we'll advertise the location, after we vet you". If the location is too bad, hard luck.

Making progress.

They're saying it's been cancelled. If it has, that's a bit of an L. The police had our backs on this one.

Marshfield erupts after learning of apparent camping event advertised for ‘minor-attracted persons’

A since-deleted website advertising a three-night event for “minor-attracted persons” has ignited fury and fear in Marshfield and Plainfield, though local leaders say there’s no evidence such a gathering is going to take place in those communities.

The outrage boiled over at Tuesday night’s Marshfield Selectboard meeting, during which more than 100 people gathered online and in person to decry the unconfirmed event that has made the rounds on social media.

“To some extent, the cart may have got in front of the horse today,” Lt. Thomas Howard, Vermont State Police’s Berlin Barracks commander, told the crowd. Though Howard called reports of the gathering happening in the two towns “unfounded,” he said that “people having certain thoughts does not necessarily mean that they’ve committed a crime.”

The website advertised a Sept. 19-22 gathering called “MAP Camp 2024” at a campground “in Vermont when the leaves are changing.” Some language on the site sexualized children.

Although the website did not specify an exact location, a number of Facebook posts alleged that it would be in the Marshfield/Plainfield area. VTDigger was unable to confirm whether the event was associated with a specific town or a specific individual.

MAP stands for “minor-attracted person” and is a synonym for pedophile, one that some have argued is less stigmatizing. Others argue the language normalizes criminal behavior.

After word of the event got out, a Facebook firestorm ensued, with hundreds of concerned comments and engagements across post after post. Some residents said they would keep their kids home from Twinfield Union School, which serves both towns, for fear they could be in danger.

The Marshfield Selectboard sought to confront the anger head on, addressing the controversy at its regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday.

Though some speakers at the meeting hungered for immediate action, Justin Campbell, chair of the Marshfield Selectboard, tempered expectations.

“There really is no resolution to be offered here tonight,” he said, noting the board lacked authority to issue or revoke zoning and event permits.

Throughout the hour of heated dialogue, Campbell allowed discussion, interjecting to prevent people from talking over and repeating each other.

Board member Christopher Whalen encouraged concerned citizens to take actions available to them, such as proposing a town ordinance, or lobbying local representatives to pass statewide legislation.

Howard, the state police lieutenant, said that police had been in touch with Twinfield school administrators and expected to continue communicating, and police might be present at the school at the end of the week. School on Friday could involve “some small tweaks,” he said.

Some in the crowd questioned Howard’s apparent coolness, with one asking if he had children of his own. Howard acknowledged that the website, which he said police were looking into, was “upsetting.”

“The biggest concern,” Howard said, “is making sure that everyone’s safe.”

Even if the event were to take place, according to Howard, holding the “viewpoint” of being attracted to minors is not against the law.

“I don’t want to leave you guys dealing with the impression that we’re not doing everything that we can. We have certain guidelines that we have to operate in,” he said. “We have to respect everyone’s rights, whether or not we agree or disagree with certain things that they did or did not say.”

Nothing about the situation, Howard added, was “100%” clear.

News of the alleged event reached the highest level of state government the next day.

Asked about the alleged “minor-attracted persons” gathering at his weekly press conference on Wednesday, Gov. Phil Scott said he had “no idea” about the event.

Responding to the question, Dan Batsie, deputy commissioner of the Vermont Department of Public Safety, said state police were investigating “conflicting reports” about the apparent gathering, with the Vermont Intelligence Center involved in that work.

“The challenge, of course, is that no laws have been broken,” he said.

Police are prepared to respond if there are “allegations of laws being broken,” Batsie said, “but we also want to be sure to protect the First Amendment rights regardless of how distasteful those opinions might be.”

Vermont State Police 'aware' of planned gathering of 'acutely marginalized' pedophiles

Vermont State Police is "working to understand" a planned campground gathering of “Minor-Attracted Persons” (MAPs) after it was promoted online.

MAP is a replaced term for "pedophiles" coined by Maryland nonprofit B4U-ACT, and it refers to people attracted to minors or those below the legal age of consent. B4U-ACT aims to “promote a science-informed understanding" about people "with an attraction to children or adolescents."

A now-deleted website promoting an event titled “MAP Camp” offered to host “acutely marginalized” MAPs at a Vermont campground from Sept. 19-22. That “first of its kind” event included strict rules for participants.

“Leading police to the campground for any reason during MAP Camp is prohibited,” a section of the website reads. “MAP Camp is committed to protecting MAPs from the harm they frequently experience by individuals or systemically in our society, and a police officer is an extremely dangerous threat to the physical safety of any nearby Black or brown MAPs.”

Another section of the site cautions campers against the hazards of camping, such as “tripping because you were distracted by a sexy minor instead of watching where you were going” and “no sexy children around to look at (a common problem when hiking).”

Other safety precautions included not referring to fellow campers by their real names and the presence of a caretaker volunteer to provide “emotional support” to participants. The site also said campers would be subjected to a “vetting process” before they were provided the location of the event.

Meals at "MAP Camp" would be prepared by “untrained volunteers of disgusting pedophiles,” according to the site. Participants would also be allowed to use “mood altering substances” during the camp, though website organizers noted no hard drugs would be allowed.

The undisclosed campsite is said to be a “woman-owned business run by People of Color” which seeks to create “community in response to worldwide inequity.” Anyone is invited to use the space so long as they “practice consent” and refrain from using “oppressive” language.

No minors are allowed to attend "MAP Camp." The camp planned to host about 20 people who are each expected to offer a suggested donation of $65.

"MAP Camp" did not respond to a request for comment from The National Desk (TND) via email Thursday as to whether the event is still taking place.

Vermont Department of Public Safety Deputy Commissioner Daniel Batsie said in a press conference Wednesday state police were aware of “conflicting reports." Vermont State Police told TND Thursday it is "working to understand what this event might entail and how best to manage any security-related and safety-related concerns for those involved and everyone in the vicinity."

"VSP is unable to monitor events or groups that engage in activities that courts have ruled are protected by the First Amendment regardless of the views those groups express. If we receive reports of criminal conduct, we would be able to open an investigation," a spokesperson said. "That said, since being made aware of this potential event, VSP has been working to understand what this event might entail and how best to manage any security-related and safety-related concerns for those involved and everyone in the vicinity."

Another article.

ORC owner Jacquelyn Reike stated she was unaware of any such meeting until it came to her attention at which point she disavowed it. She stated she would never allow a meeting that could endanger children on her property.

I think Reike knows for a fact that MAPs aren't a danger to children. She's choosing her words carefully.
