Roblox's age-verification system was designed as a response to allegations it has a child predator problem. Less than a week in, how's it going? Well, Wired reported on Tuesday that, in some cases, it's classifying children as adults and adults as children. So, not so great!

Last week, Roblox made age verification mandatory for anyone using the platform's chat feature. That process involves either submitting a facial age estimate via selfie or (optionally for anyone 13 or older) uploading a government ID check. After verifying, you can only chat with groups of players around your age.

The move came after reports grew of predators using the platform to groom young children. That, in turn, led to lawsuits from Louisiana, Texas and Kentucky. Meanwhile, Florida's attorney general has issued criminal subpoenas.

Parents across the Netherlands are voicing serious concerns about the online gaming platform Roblox, citing harmful interactions ranging from grooming and scams to bullying between children, according to a new survey by EenVandaag. The findings follow earlier reporting that Dutch teenagers were recruited through a Roblox game by a cult. More than 1,200 parents participated in the study, which concentrated on families with at least one minor child who plays Roblox. The platform is reportedly especially popular among children ages 9 to 12.

Nearly two-thirds of parents surveyed, 64 percent, said they worry at times about their child’s safety on Roblox. One in seven parents, 14 percent, said their child has experienced unpleasant or harmful contact on the platform. Some of those cases involved grooming or other forms of inappropriate behavior.

The gaming platform Roblox has been at the center of controversy for the past year, due to allegedly being used as a hub for child grooming, which left the platform as the defendant in over 35 lawsuits last year, including a case against the state of Louisiana.

Currently, attorney Mike Mandell, also known as Law by Mike on social media, is partnering with Schlep, a Roblox YouTuber and predator buster, in a lawsuit against the game’s platform. Currently, he is representing 800 victims.

Schlep has over 2.8 million followers on YouTube and has built his platform on taking down online child predators and educating the public on the dangers of online platforms. Schlep does undercover work, taking inspiration from Chris Hansen, by creating decoy accounts to lure and expose predators, some leading to arrests and prosecution.

Schlep himself was a victim of grooming on Roblox by an unidentified game developer. He has been vocal that his experience, along with others, is the reason he started exposing predators.

On Aug. 9, 2025, Roblox sent Schlep a cease-and-desist letter, alleging his methods violated the platform’s terms of service and “actively interfered” with established safety protocols. His accounts were permanently banned, and Roblox warned continued activity could prompt legal action against him.

Australia’s Communications Minister has demanded an urgent meeting with the company behind the popular children’s online game Roblox over concerns the platform is being infiltrated by predators targeting minors.

The multiplayer gaming app is played by more than 90 million people around the world — most of them children and some as young as six years old — but recent concerns have emerged about its safety controls.

In a letter to Roblox, Labor frontbencher Anika Wells expressed alarm at “reports of children being exposed to graphic and gratuitous user-generated content on the platform, including sexually explicit and suicidal material”.

“Even more disturbing are ongoing reports and concerns about children being approached and groomed by predators, who actively seek to exploit their curiosity and innocence,” the Minister has told the company, in the publicly released letter.

“I note that Roblox engaged extensively with the eSafety Commissioner throughout 2024 and 2025 to develop and implement additional safety measures for children. Despite this, the issues appear to persist.

“This is untenable, and these issues are of deep concern to many Australians parents and carers. I therefore seek an urgent meeting with you to discuss the steps Roblox is taking to improve safety outcomes and experiences on its platform.”

Ms Wells said she would be particularly interested in hearing about “the measures Roblox has taken to restrict children from engaging with high impact experiences, the status of implementing age assurance processes, and restrictions in place to prevent adults from contacting children”.
