Beatings used to be WAY more common

We like to glorify the old days but it was not all sunshine and rainbow back then either. 300 years ago to about the 1980s it was common place for dads to beat the ever living fuck out of their kids for the smallest little infractions.....I'm not talking just a hard spank I mean some men back then were just pieces of shit and would straight up beat the fuck outta their kids, even if they were not a "wife beater" or alcoholic.

Now days while some parents do spank or wrist slap it's much less common than it was for dads or moms (parents in general) to straight up beat on their kids like they used to.

Like fuck back in the old days get bad grades? Beating, disagree with Mom on something even respectfully so? Beating......question any older adult or family member on literally anything? Beating and the list goes on.

How relevant... I was just replying on my post and mentioned some of the discipline techniques my parents used on me and my siblings but didnt go into this.... My dad did use to hit/spank(?) us and when we were being naughty he would countdown to 1 from 5 so you had 4 seconds to continue being a dick until you had to stop I guess, lol. Anyway, while I dont think it was a good thing he didnt all out beat us so I guess it was a lot better than what kids had in the 80s by the sound of it

Yes, child abuse existed back then, too. Usually perpetuated by twisted sadists. But nobody who actually loved children would have done that. Even in the 1700s (Europe), although child labour was legal, there were still laws against extreme neglect and mistreatment of children, and magistrates could intervene in those cases. Influential enlightenment thinkers of that era like John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau were also critical of physicallly disciplining children. Besides, it would be extremely low IQ for someone to try to destroy their children's health, especially in a time when medical care was costly, and children were often needed for labour.

There is this sort of contemporary man-hating stereotype, that most men in the 1700s were just violent animals who were encouraged to physically assault anyone smaller and weaker. In reality, the severe beating of wives and children was NOT widely celebrated, it was NOT 'noble' conduct. This was an era known for chivalry and gallantry, after all. Men who did such things were often publicly scrutinised as 'brutes' and 'domestic monsters.' There were also laws in most European countries against assault and battery, especially violence resulting in serious injury (laws made by men who were against such violence).
