Was Charles Dodgson (a.k.a., Lewis Carroll) a MAP?

Post by Artaxerxes II »

Following my very successful thread on Michael Jackson and the really pressing issue regarding his sexuality (link below), I think it's fair to ask a similar question regarding Lewis Carroll (real name: Charles Dodgson), the author of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.

A point of contention for his fans comes with regards to his relationship with Alice Liddell, the daughter of his friends with whom he first met when she was 9-years-old. Apparently she was also Charles's muse, as he not only created the story of Wonderland when he tried to entertain Alice and one of her sisters during a boat trip, but the very protagonist Alice was inspired by Alice Liddell herself. Such is the symbolism for MAPS that the best known holiday that celebrates girl love is named after her. And this isn't without basis, as Charles and Alice were said to be very close up until he got estranged from her family. Unfortunately, neither of their diaries have survived intact to the present, so the pages that might've explained this affair are no more.

With all that said, were Alice and Charles just friends, or more than that? The debate stems precisely from this, as one side asserts that Charles was a MAP, while the other sides claims the two were just friends.

In my opinion, I think the answer will remain unknown as there isn't much proof to go by. And while there is some proof Charles had a peculiar interest in girls (as demonstrated by his collection of Victorian nude paintings of girls) we might never know what transpired between Charles and Alice themselves. An open-ended question indeed.

So y'all, do you think Lewis Carroll was a MAP or not? Feel free to discuss it at length in this thread, as well as partake in the poll.
