A man who worked for the Richmond Fire Department is facing federal charges related to child pornography. A criminal complaint filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Lexington accuses Derek Morgan Hahn, 36, of production and attempted production of child pornography, receipt or distribution of a visual depiction of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct and possession of material depicting a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct. According to an affidavit filed by a special agent with the Department of Homeland Security, the messaging account that was used to upload child sexual abuse material found on Hahn’s phone was logged into from IP addresses connected to Hahn’s home, as well as the Richmond Fire Department, where Hahn worked third shift. It is not clear where Hahn was when the material was uploaded. A forensic examination of Hahn’s iPhone showed that it was used to produce videos of a child in a bathroom in which the victim “does not appear to know he is being recorded.” The affidavit states that the camera appears to have been recording from a hiding place such as a vent. The recordings were made in Madison County between Nov. 19, 2023, and Sept. 18, according to the document. The phone had more than 3,100 images and videos of child sexual abuse material on it, the affidavit states. Hahn’s initial court appearance in the federal case is scheduled for Tuesday. Hahn was charged last month in Madison District Court with two counts of distribution of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor over 12. A hearing in that case is scheduled for Dec. 11.
