The Power of (Info-)Graphics

Post by FairBlueLove »

For how much debate and theorizing is vital, besides being one of the main points of the forum, unfortunately not many people will go through tons of written material.

Graphical educational material would be more immediate for the person approaching the community. And could be easily diffused and potentially produce high impact.

Alas, it often happens that who is good at writing has no graphics skills (or no interest on graphic representations) and vice-versa.

I think both words and graphics are important. So why don't we unite their power?

I would be happy to help transforming core ideas into graphics (I'm especially thinking about info-graphics). So this is an open call, a proposal to submit your ideas. Just describe summarily (or with details) how you would represent your ideas and I'll do my best to provide an image.

Now, I understand the Mu forum is not focused on graphic content, but compelling info-graphics could be used to accompany the articles on the website.

Infographics and visuals in general are a powerful tool that is underutilised.

Some examples of powerful visuals I've experienced.

- I've heard about the US prison system and how unfair it is and how big it is compared to other countries but it was a website that just scrolled through representations of inmates, their colors, how many had defended themselves and so on that shocked me. I've heard of that website being blocked in some places because it's so disturbing, and yet it's just a visual representation of real facts.

- I've heard of hacking and cybercrime but it wasn't until someone showed me a live map of virus infections and attacks happening in realtime that it became real, and again it shocked me to see the reality of a situation.

- I saw a short movie about the stats of WW2, the numbers of people killed. Obviously I knew the general scale in my head but seeing it set out in a visual way was truly shocking.

Reading something can be impactful, but seeing it can be world changing. There's some great websites that discuss why visuals are so much more impactful than reading, how the brain treats visual input more efficiently and creates a much stronger and longer lasting impact.

Are you familiar with the memes and graphics page on Newgon? It leans mostly to pro-c messaging, but there's a lot of content. When Twitter moderation was still a bit more lax some of these got quite a bit of mileage:

Yes, thanks, I'm familiar with that page. A lot of good stuff and info-graphics too. It might seem that every main concept has been already represented, but I trust the thinkers/creatives here have some new ideas, and I'm here to offer my humble skills to put it into graphic form.

I would be extremely grateful to anyone who could make infographics to accompany the articles on the Mu site.

I need a good description of what you want to be depicted, and I'll try to design it.
