Bankruptcy law reform push after paedophile protects assets in superannuation
In 2023, Edan van Haren was awarded $1.4 million in damages by the NSW Supreme Court after being abused by a convicted paedophile.

His abuser, Maurice Van Ryn, has since used legal loopholes to avoid paying damages.

A child sex abuse victim is yet to see a cent nearly three years after the court ruled an Aussie billionaire and convicted paedophile pay $1.4 million in damages.

Former Bega Cheese boss Maurice Van Ryn was convicted of abusing nine children between 2003 and 2014, before later being convicted of abusing a tenth child in 2019.

He was sentenced to 22 years in prison.

In 2022, Edan Van Haren bravely chose to “go public” with his devastating sexual abuse that occurred at the hands of Van Ryn during 2010-2012, when he was just 14 years old.

Mr Van Haren filed in the Supreme Court in February of 2022, claiming compensation for injury, loss and damage he had suffered as a result of the abuse.

Van Ryn was ordered to pay a sum of $1.4 million to Mr Van Haren within two weeks in 2023, relating to general damages and loss of earning capacity.

That same year, the CEO who also went by the name of ‘the big cheese’, filed for bankruptcy, leaving Mr Van Haren unable to access hundreds of thousands of dollars in the sex-offender’s superannuation.

The Federal Government is moving to close a loophole that allowed convicted paedophiles to declare bankruptcy to avoid paying compensation to their victims.

A vocal campaign led by Edan Van Haren, a victim survivor of former Bega Cheese boss Maurice Van Ryn has resulted in the Commonwealth finally proposing new laws.

The draft legislation now out for public comment designed to prevent perpetrators like Van Ryn from avoiding having to pay court imposed compensation.
