Jon Venables, as he was once called, could soon walk free from prison, in what will be another terrible blow for the family of tragic James Bulger.
Venables was just 10 years old when, on February 12, 1993, he and his accomplice, Robert Thompson, also 10, snatched two-year-old James at the New Strand Shopping Centre in Bootle, Merseyside. James's mother, Denise Fergus, momentarily looked away from the toddler while paying for goods at A.R. Tym's butcher's shop. When she looked back, the little boy was gone.
What happened next made for one of the most devastating cases in British criminal history. As captured on haunting CCTV footage, Venables and Thompson led the younger child by the hand out of the shopping centre and to a railway embankment in Walton. It was here that they inflicted 42 separate injuries on James, assaulting him with bricks, stones, and a 22lb iron fishplate. After the tiny child succumbed to blunt force trauma, they then left his body on the railway tracks to be struck by a train.
