Paedophiles, killers and rapists to be freed early within months in 'justice scandal'

Some of the UK's worst criminals including killers, rapists and paedophiles will be able to walk out from jail early within months in what has been described a a 'betrayal' of victims. The Ministry of Justice’s is bringing in sentencing reforms after receiving Royal Assent today (January 22).

It means 43,000 criminals will avoid prison altogether while many convicts will be out after spending just a third of their jail term behind bars. And those sentenced to four years or more will only be let out after serving 50 per cent of their sentence.

The so-called 'progression model' will come into force this autumn. The MoJ insisted the changes were necessary to prevent prisons being overcrowded.
