We must retake marriage for children

A little over a decade ago, the Supreme Court declared same-sex marriage to be a constitutional right in the case known as Obergefell v. Hodges. Americans were assured the decision was simply about adult equality. Those who warned that redefining marriage would harm children were dismissed as fearmongers and bigots.

Our concerns were mocked as a “slippery slope.” In reality, it was a cliff—and we went straight over it.

Americans are increasingly weary of being told that defending marriage between a man and a woman is rooted in hate. Many have watched our culture unravel as sex offenders gain access to children, drag shows are celebrated in the name of equality, and schools impose the fiction that marriage definitions are interchangeable. We have seen the normalization of polyamory and even attempts to rebrand the horror of pedophilia under the euphemism “minor-attracted persons.”

What is finally becoming clear is this: marriage functioned as a cultural firewall protecting children. When it was legally redefined, that firewall was dismantled—and the enemy walked through the gates.
