The appointment of the controversial lawyer, writer and politician, Daniel Mendoza, at the Colombian embassy in Thailand has generated a wave of criticism towards Gustavo Petro. Members of the opposition and social leaders rejected his appointment, considering him a sexist and a pedophile given his virulent publications, with high sexual content, on social media.
"I want a wild girl who doesn't take care of her nails or shave her pussy; a real slob between the sheets, who occasionally leaves me hanging on Fridays, who takes a little bit of drugs, but with various things; a girl without guarantees with whom I always have to use a condom, one like you," he wrote on the old Twitter network.
"If you girls don't feed your pussy in a balanced way, it will end up malnourished and depressed. Or It could die of starvation," read another. "Holy week is coming, we're going to get her drunk, we're going to drug her, and then, when she's defenseless asleep, we'll tie her up and we'll all fuck her up," said one of the dozens of posts along the same lines, some accompanied by a photo of him in which he only hid his genitals with cell phones.
He also promoted drug use: "That thing about drugs killing is pure bullshit!!!" or "Without drugs, an adolescent youth may exist, but don't live."
His name first came to light a few years ago, after being involved in a scandal at the elegant Club El Nogal, located in the north of Bogotá, to which he belonged. More than twenty members reported that Mendoza stalked them in the gym and, "while doing so, he subtly touched his private parts."
Precisely in reference to these events, President Petro defended his decision with arguments that also raised hackles. "Somewhere they are telling me that I cannot name Mr. Mendoza as ambassador because some photos of him naked with some women were published," he shouted in a quarrelsome speech, delivered this Thursday in Barranquilla. "The women are not saying that they were forced, but that they liked the moment. How do they expect a libertarian and progressive government to prohibit love and making love? As if I were Pinochet. I am not Uribe, I am not a praying priest", he added.
"Worse than the appointment is the absurd defense that the president made. It is an affront to women," Congresswoman Catherine Miranda, of Alianza Verde, told EL MUNDO. And she added that "here we are not talking about love but about violence against women, about violent carnal access against minors in a society that seems to have normalized paedophilia and the sexualization of minors. Once again the president shows that he is sexist and misogynistic because this is not the first time that this kind of thing has happened. The list of abusers that make up his government is long".
The Ombudsman, Iris Marín, joined the criticism by considering that "Mendoza has publicly expressed his satisfaction with sexual relations with girls or with women who have previously been given drugs. That is not love, these are forms of sexual violence against women and, even worse, girls."
For its part, the Diplomatic and Consular Association of Colombia (Asodiplo) issued a statement claiming that it can "negatively affect the perception of Colombia abroad and hinder the strengthening of bilateral relations."
It is worth remembering that Petro, when he was a presidential candidate, promised that he would not use the foreign service to pay for political favours, but he filled the embassies with friends, collaborators and politicians of his ilk.
Miranda also blamed the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luis Gilberto Murillo, for Mendoza's election despite having announced that he would create a section in his portfolio to protect women's rights. He did so after Armando Benedetti's ex-wife, when he was ambassador to the FAO, denounced him for abuse. But he remained in Rome until Petro appointed him presidential advisor with an office in the Nariño Palace.
