Nothing more serious than what he committed, and to me killing carries more weight than rape. If we talk about desert, I don’t think that criminals per se “deserve” something, but I see the law more as a way of managing society than as something tied to justice. From this point of view, I would therefore think of prison, if a fine were seen as too lenient by the community for this type of crime, assuming the rape was intentional. (Meaning without mitigating factors related to mental illness, drunkenness, drugs, or anything of that sort—altered states, basically.)
Pretty much how I feel! Fear keeps people in line and those who wield the fear mongering in control. I do personally believe some criminals do deserve something, but death penalties I think should be used as an absolute last resort after therapy and other such means have been exhausted. Seems we'd rather hate than help, which is sad.
Then there's proper getting locked up, tortured and killed for doing something to help themselves, cannabis is also illegal in Idaho, yet it helps so many with health issues. It carries one of the longest sentences.
Plus in the case of 'pedophiles', if the child actually enjoyed the sex act, the adult is still held accountable for "assault" of a minor. People love to punish MAPs even when no one was harmed, but then gaslight and essentially groom the minor into believing they didn't enjoy it or they were hurt, leading to more confusion.
