Olympian under fire for statutory rape a decade ago

Post by Fragment »

Ten years ago a 19-year-old was convicted of statutory rape with a 12-year-old, and served his time. A decade later he's completed an extensive rehabilitation programme and experts had concluded there was no risk of him reoffending, but nonetheless people want him kicked from the Games. When is doing your time enough? What is the point of a criminal sentence if society won't let you reintegrate back into normal life?
Van de Velde, who is now 29, was sentenced to four years in prison in 2016 after pleading guilty to raping the British girl. He had flown to England to meet her in 2014 with full knowledge of her age, having met her on Facebook.

When he was sentenced Judge Sheridan told him: “Prior to coming to this country you were training as a potential Olympian. Your hopes of representing your country now lie as a shattered dream.” The court heard that his victim had self-harmed and taken an overdose.

Van de Velde served 12 months in a British prison, before being transferred to his home country where he was released after a further month. He has since gone on to play internationally for the Netherlands.

Andrea Simon, executive director of the End Violence Against Women Coalition said Van de Velde’s inclusion in the Games sent a “worrying message” to men who commit rape “that there will unlikely be any consequences, and therefore no deterrent”.
Andrea Simon doesn't want justice. She wants extrajudicial punishment. For men only. Her comment in particular is disgusting.

Yes, I just saw a tiktok about this. It seems enough is never enough. No one can ever serve enough time. They want even more and more punitive actions, and more and more laws criminalizing more actions. No forgiveness for the "criminal" , no amount of restitution will ever bbe enough.

Much more information here.

The two continued to communicate after the 'rape'.

This is actually a really sad case, even with the Olympic drama taken out. Why are the "victims" never listened to?

Yep from what I see its always "Shoot the offender and throw them into a volcano." Not to say that certain crimes can't be forgiven because somethings can't be forgiven. I do think everyone should be given a second chance.

This double standard that people have towards teens must stop, it is reaching such absurd levels that at any moment there will be a bloodbath. On the other hand, people don't care about the justice system, they only use it when suits them, or they jump when someone goes beyond the extremist standards to ruin their lives.

Yes, I think western countries are going to slowly breed extremism among MAPs the same way they bred extremism among Muslims with their brutal invasions. I hope I'm wrong, but the persecution of MAPs has become so outrageous that it's surely only a matter of time before a young MAP, or a sex offender with nothing to lose, snaps.

Earlier this week, there was a horrific case in the UK; a 17 year old inexplicably stabbed three children to death in a rampage. My first thought was, "I hope this is not an MAP that went insane, got thoughts twisted around in his head, and took it out on the children he could not have."

In my opinion we shouldn't even use their terms like "statuatory rape," even if that is the name that the law calls it. From what I have seen, I have seen no evidence that he actually raped the girl, and we should not under any circumstances give into their terrible mindset that willing relationships between a minor and someone older is "rape."
